Barbara's Big Birthday Year

As most of you will already know, legendary Carry On and EastEnders star Dame Barbara Windsor will celebrate a very special birthday this August. Barbara is an iconic national treasure with a career in the business dating back to the 1950s.

Her story is a familiar one, told in countless interviews, biographies and even in one or two television dramas. Barbara has become one of the best known of all the Carry On actors despite appearing in only nine original films in the series. I think her fame is partly due to her longevity - as many of her co-stars have sadly long since passed away. She was also always immediately recognisable, standing out more than all the rest.

As Barbara prepares to turns 80 we have already seen a brand new feature length drama from the BBC, telling Barbara's story from her early years in Shoreditch through her Carry On stardom and beyond. There are bound to be many other tributes to Babs as her big birthday approaches and here at Carry On Blogging we'll be celebrating too.

As with the blogs I've written about Joan Sims and Hattie Jacques, I plan to profile each of Barbara's nine Carry On film roles in the lead up to her birthday in August. I'll also be sharing some classic clips from her career and hopefully a few more surprises.

So stay tuned for much, much more on the wonderful Dame Barbara Windsor later in this very special year for her.
