Happy Birthday Richard O'Sullivan!

Many happy returns to the actor Richard O'Sullivan who celebrates his 73rd birthday today! Richard, a huge success in the 1970s and 1980s on the small screen, grabbed one of his earliest roles as ringleader Robin Stevens in the 1959 classic comedy Carry On Teacher.

I have a real soft spot for Teacher and Richard is great as the chief saboteur who plots a series of pranks to disrupt a school inspection and keep the beloved headmaster Ted Ray at Maudlin Street School. Richard went on to a hugely successful career with a role in the 1963 epic Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. He is probably most famous for a string of high profile roles on television. He played lothario Robin Tripp in the classic seventies sitcom Man About The House and its spin-off, Robin's Nest.

Richard also went on to star in series such as Dick Turpin, Me and My Girl and Doctor at Large. Sadly we haven't seen much of Richard in recent years as he has battled with ill health. He did make a return to Carry On in more recent times when he took part in an outrageously fun audio commentary for the DVD of Carry On Teacher alongside fellow Maudlin Street alumni Paul Cole and Larry Dann.

Whatever Richard is up to today, I hope he has a wonderful birthday.
