Great British Smut at the BFI!

The British Film Institute has announced a blockbuster "Comedy Genius" season for the Autumn of 2018, billed as the UK's greatest ever celebration of film and television comedy. From October to December the comedy geniuses of the big and small screen will be making us laugh at the BFI Southbank and cinemas across the UK, online on the BFI Player and with a wide range of UK partner cinemas.

And yes there's a Carry On link. On 10 November the BFI will celebrate "Great British Smut", a day of saucy and risqué humour. The day will include a screening of the classic 1964 comedy Carry On Cleo starring Sid James, Amanda Barrie and Kenneth Williams, to mark 60 years of the Carry On franchise.

The day will also include "The Joy of Smut", a clip-based event celebrating the Kings and Queens of British smut including the likes of Benny Hill, Beryl Reid and Frankie Howerd. There will also be a panel discussion entitled "Should We Still Be At It?" which will address the place this kind of so-called smutty comedy has in the modern world.

I'm not sure how I feel about Carry Ons being labelled as smut but I do like the sound of the day itself. And seeing Carry On Cleo back up on the big screen where it belongs can only be a good thing!

Still Saucy at 60: The Times asks why the Carry Ons keep on getting away with it!

I stumbled across this very interesting article in the The Times online just the other day. Written to help celebrate the 60th anniversary of our beloved Carry On films, journalist Andy Plaice discusses the history and success of the Carry Ons and asks why they are still popular today.

It's most definitely worth a read and while it won't tell diehard fans anything they didn't already know, it does feature comments from the legendary Bernard Cribbins, the writer John Antrobus (who submitted an original script for Sergeant way back in 1958) and most interestingly of all, Rita Hudis, widow of the late Norman who scripted the first six Carry Ons. It seems Rita has a few choice words to say about Norman's experience of working on the Carry Ons and for producer Peter Rogers!

Cribbins recalls working with the colourful Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey and claims Williams was so complex with "this great facade" which meant he never really got to know anything about him, which is such a shame. Bernard is very down to earth about his reasons for working on the films, claiming that although the money might not have been great, it was quick and if you weren't working, you wouldn't say no to it. And of course he loved the fun of it all.

Apparently, the article goes on to tell us, the Carry Ons will feature as part of the British Film Institute's Comedy Genius Autumn Season so we'll wait to see what that involves. The piece ends with Andy Plaice's take on three of the best and three of the worst Carry Ons ever made. Always a fraught discussion, I'm not entirely sure I agree with some of his choices! My Carry On Blogging Highlights So Far

 

It's not normally very British to blow your own trumpet (Matron!) however I wanted to do a little blog post as a round up of Carry On Blogging highlights so far. It's been quite a journey since I started blogging back in 2015 and I've loved every minute of it!

I'm thrilled that the blog has now received nearly 1 million page visits since I set it up in March 2015! March this year was the most visited month so far with over 70,000 views!

The blog Twitter account now has over 16,000 followers. Thank you to everyone who tweets, follows, likes and comments - it's always great to hear from you!

 

I have published a series of blogs covering each of Joan Sims' 24 Carry On performances, giving my own opinions on the roles she played.

I have carried on this theme by publishing a series of blogs covering each of Hattie Jacques' 14 Carry On performances and all 9 of Barbara Windsor's roles.

I have started a project of blogs running through some of the lesser known Carry On supporting actors in an A - Z feature.

I have cast the net out far and wide for a range of guest blog posts to bring in different opinions on the Carry On films.

I got a sneak preview of Sarah Miller Walters' new book Joyce To The World

I visited the London Film Convention back in Spring 2016 where I had the great pleasure of meeting Carry On actors Jacki Piper and Fenella Fielding. You can read about that here

Having interviewed the fabulous Madeline Smith in 2016 it was a thrill to finally meet her in person in June. I attended "From Biba to Bond: An Evening with Madeline Smith" at the Stow Roses Women's Institute in North London. You can read about my encounter with the lovely Maddie here

I ventured out to the Victoria and Albert Museum in January for a special Evening with Dame June Whitfield where the legendary actress discussed her decision to donate her archive to the museum. You can read about that wonderful evening here

I also started off a couple of new series in tribute to the 60th year of Carry On. I began profiling the stars of the original Carry On, Carry On Sergeant. You can read the first of those blogs here and I have recently began counting down my own Top 20 Favourite Carry On Actors

Two Gentlemen Sharing Screening plus Q&A with Judy Geeson at the BFI

As I mentioned over on Twitter last night, there will be a rare chance to catch the actress Judy Geeson in conversation at the BFI early next month. The British Film Institute on London's South Bank will be hosting a special screening of the 1969 British film drama Two Gentlemen Sharing, in which Judy played the character of Jane.

Well I say you can catch Judy, but she won't actually be there in person. She has been based in the United States for many years and will take part in a live Q&A by Skype alongside the film's director Ted Kotcheff. The film tells the story of an upper class white Englishman who is forced to confront his own feelings and prejudices when the London flat he advertises for sharing is taken up by an Oxford-educated black Jamaican. 

Adapted by Jamaican-born Evan Jones from a novel by David Stuart Leslie, it follows this ambitious young Jamaican in swinging London as he battles every day racism and tries to enter the hallowed portals of British business. Allegedly considered an incitement to race-riot, it was given an X certificate and never released in the UK. It was, however, considered suitable for the Venice Film Festival in 1969 and played continuously in France and the US.

Joining Judy in the cast were actors Robin Phillips, Esther Anderson (who will also take part in the event at the BFI), Earl Cameron and Rachel Kempson. Also look out for two other actors who made Carry On appearances - Norman Rossington playing Phil and Elspeth March as Ethne's Mother.

The film and Q&A are part of the BFI's Black and Banned season. The special screening and Q&A will take place on Saturday 1 September from 2pm. And you can buy tickets here
