I'm sure this festive photo is a ravishing sight to many Carry On fans! Regular Carry On glamour girl Valerie Leon made her only television appearance with the team in 1972 when she co-starred in the third Christmas Special, Carry On Stuffing. Playing a serving wench who popped up throughout the show, she larked about with the likes of Peter Butterworth and Kenneth Connor. And here she is bringing in the pudding!

the late, great Sid James giving his all in the 1970 Carry On Again
Christmas Thames Television special. Written by Talbot Rothwell and Sid
Colin, it starred Sid as Long John Silver (!) It has a Robinson Crusoe
feel to it and the gang gamely join in with the fun. Although
this photo of Sid is in glorious technicolour, the show actually went
out in black and white. It also featured the very first Carry On
appearances for both Carol Hawkins and Wendy Richard. I think Sid really
looks the part here, don't you? What a Carry On at Christmas!
Some
more wonderful old British Pathe newsreel footage has appeared on the
interweb and I feel that it's my duty to share some of these gems with
you! Right up until the mid-1960s, British Pathe presented regular short
films and features on a wide range of subjects, promoting businesses,
the best of British events and updating cinema-goers on the latest news
from both near and far.
A
good many of these brilliant shorts featured some very familiar faces
from the world of British comedy and in particular, the Carry On films. I
have tracked down a fair few and plan to share them in a series of
blogs. They present a fantastic glimpse back into possibly simpler
times, to a Britain that probably no longer exists and gives a precious,
fleeting glance at some of our comedy heroes still on duty but away
from the familiarity of Pinewood.
Today we're going all the way back to Christmas 1963. Apologies for posting Christmas-themed videos in Summer time but I just can't resist them! This gloriously colourful festive film sees Christmas preparations getting under way in London's East End. And there's a fair few comedy heroes involved! In the film below you can spot the likes of Sid James, Barbara Windsor, Frankie Howerd and Davy Kaye. Also look out for Angela Douglas' future husband Kenneth More.

a very special Carry On Christmas image for you today. The delightful
Angela Douglas is looking very festive in this promotional shot from the
1960s! I think this photo must have been taken around the time of Carry
On Cowboy, Angela's first Carry On with the gang. Angela
is a fans favourite who starred in four classic Carry Ons in the mid
1960s. I think this photo would make a perfect Christmas card! What a Carry On at Christmas!
Delving
into Studiocanal's archives at Pinewood Studios, where the Carry On
series was filmed, Art & Hue has created six pop art portraits of
the much-loved stars as well as reworked the classic posters of the
first 12 films into stylish fine art prints.
Based on the first
12 Carry On films, all of the prints come in three sizes and 16 colour
options, are available with or without cast billing, with most using (or
remixing) the original poster imagery, and some re-imagined.
The
longest-running British film series, the pop art collection has been
months in the preparation, with trips to the archives at Pinewood
Studios, and is now online.
The Carry On films have their own
distinct style that is totally unique, beloved by many, and an important
part of Britain's comedy, film, and cultural heritage, and 2016 marks
50 years since the final Anglo-Amalgamated Carry On film.
British
film company Anglo Amalgamated distributed the first 12 Carry On films
starting with Carry On Sergeant in 1958 and ending 50 years ago with
Carry On Screaming in 1966.
Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Hattie
Jacques, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims, and Barbara Windsor (Dame Babs)
have been given the Art & Hue treatment featuring Art & Hue's

dear, this picture is wrong on just about every level but I couldn't
resist sharing it! It's taken from the 1973 Carry On Christmas special
and features Sid as a rather naughty department store Father Christmas
and Barbara as a rather mature school girl! It definitely couldn't be
made today but back in the 70s things were a little different! The
scene is a Carry On classic. Joan Sims brings her naughty daughter
Virginia (Virgin for short) in to see Santa for her Christmas pressie.
The dialogue between Sid and Barbara is extremely fruity and about as
naughty and provocative as Carry On could ever get but it's all in the
name of festive fun and somehow, they manage to get away with it. Just.

I'm sure this festive photo is a ravishing sight to many Carry On fans! Bubbly Barbara Windsor poses in some suitably festive attire in today's picture, taken I believe in the late 1960s. Barbara often appeared with many other well known public figures and comedy stars at charity functions such as those held by the Variety Club. This snap, taken before one such event shows Babs getting right into the spirit of things! I'm not sure how festive those knee highleather boots are mind you...
