This is the latest in a brand new series for Carry On Blogging. It might be slightly ambitious, but I'm going to attempt to do a run through the alphabet of some of the more interesting Carry On supporting actors. One of the reasons I set up this blog was to turn the spotlight on some of the lesser known Carry On actors who nevertheless played an important role in the success of the film series.
Today we continue with the next letter in the alphabet, L and L is for George Layton.
Carry On films: George Layton played the cameo role of a hospital doctor in the 1975 film Carry On Behind, appearing with Kenneth Williams and Linda Hooks. Layton's casting came at the peak of his fame, playing a doctor in the Doctor In The House spin-off series on television.
Best known for: Playing Dr Paul Collier in the small screen adaptation of Doctor In The House and it's sequels Doctor at Large, Doctor in Charge and Doctor at the Top. Also for a recurring role as Des the mechanic in early episodes of Minder and for appearing as Solly Solomons in the first two series of It Ain't Half Hot Mum.
Did you know: George appeared alongside Patrick Mower as a couple of Australian crooks in an episode of The Sweeney in 1975. The pair were so popular in their roles that the writers constructed a follow up episode so the characters could return.
Layton began a second career as a writer for television in the 1970s. His credits include the Richard O'Sullivan sitcom Robin's Nest, Don't Wait Up starring Tony Britton, Dinah Sheridan and Nigel Havers and Executive Stress starring Geoffrey Palmer and Penelope Keith.
What are they up to now: At the age of 73, George is still busy in the acting profession. Recent credits include episodes of Boomers, Doctors, Vicious and Casualty.
