This is the latest in a brand new series for Carry On Blogging. It might be slightly ambitious, but I'm going to attempt to do a run through the alphabet of some of the more interesting Carry On supporting actors. One of the reasons I set up this blog was to turn the spotlight on some of the lesser known Carry On actors who nevertheless played an important role in the success of the film series.
Today we continue with the next letter in the alphabet, M and M is for Reuben Martin.
Carry On films: Reuben Martin had three Carry On outings during his career, all involving a gorilla suit! In 1969 he played a rather fruity gorilla in Carry On Up The Jungle. Six years later he played Mabel the gorilla in an episode of the Carry On Laughing television series, Lamp Posts of the Empire and finally he once again turned up as a gorilla in Carry On Emmannuelle in 1978.
Also appeared in: The television series Space: 1999 in 1976 as yet another gorilla! Out of costume, Reuben appeared in the television movie An Apple a Day, the film version of Up Pompeii and an episode of The Dickie Henderson Show.
Best known for: Playing gorillas!
Did you know: Jacki Piper was once having lunch in the BBC canteen with the Two Ronnies when she was approached by a young man who was rather excited to see her. Claiming that Jacki had gone to bed with his father in Carry On Up The Jungle, he turned out to be the son of Reuben Martin! The Two Ronnies were both impressed and amused by the story!
What are they up to now: Sadly Reuben passed away at the age of 72 in 1993. If anyone has any photos of Reuben out of his gorilla costume, as it were, please do get in touch!
