Carry On Faces of 1968

This is part of a new series of blogs on Carry On Blogging. I plan to blog each year of Carry On, featuring photos of the most prolific actors for each year. Hopefully it will provide an interesting overview of the changing face of Carry On during the series' original mammoth twenty year run. 

It will turn the spotlight on the familiar faces who endured over the decades as well as those artists who came and went along the way. We are continuing today with 1968. Two films were produced that year, first of all Up The Khyber in the spring and then it was back to the modern day for Carry On Camping in the autumn of the same year.

Pictured above we have the most prolific actors to appear in 1968. They are as follows: Sidney James as Sir Sidney Ruff Diamond in Khyber; Kenneth Williams as Dr Soaper in Camping; Charles Hawtrey pictured above as Charlie Muggins in Camping; Joan Sims as Lady Joan Ruff Diamond in Khyber; Terry Scott as Peter Potter in Camping; Bernard Bresslaw pictured as Bungdit Din in Khyber; Peter Butterworth as Brother Belcher in Khyber; Julian Holloway as Jim Tanner in Camping and finally, Barbara Windsor as Babs in Camping.

Of those featured above, three actors (Williams, Hawtrey and Scott) were original cast members from the very first film, Carry On Sergeant in 1958. All the actors featured above apart from Barbara Windsor appeared in both Carry Ons made in 1968. These two films proved to be the most popular Carry Ons ever at the British cinema box office and saw the peak of the entire series.

Terry Scott returned as a full member of the Carry On Team ten years after his last and only appearance in the series, in a small supporting role in Sergeant. Julian Holloway took on his most substantial parts in the series in both these films - his role in Camping was written for the absent Jim Dale. Dale took a year away from the Carry Ons to concentrate on stage work at this time.
