Here's a lovely clip from back in the good old days. Eric Sykes and Hattie Jacques formed one of my very favourite comedy partnerships. They just worked so well together. In 1963 they performed a sketch during the Royal Variety Performance.
In the early 1960s the duo were at the height of their popularity. Eric was well established as one of the country's finest comedy writers and was now also a big star in front of the camera. Hattie too was extremely popular thanks to regular roles on radio and of course, the Carry On films. Eric and Hattie had also spent the past three years in the classic comedy series Sykes And A ... for BBC television.
As twins Eric and Hat, the world of Sebastopol Terrace in Acton would keep the nation entertained until 1965 before being rebooted in colour once again for the BBC in 1972. Sykes and Jacques forged a comedy partnership which would last right up until Hattie's sad death in 1980.
So here they are away back in the black and white days of 1963, entertaining the Royal Variety audience with their usual perfect timing and comedy high jinks. Enjoy!
