Carry On Faces of 1960/61

This is the beginning of a new series of blogs on Carry On Blogging. I plan to blog each year of Carry On, featuring photos of the most prolific actors for each year. Hopefully it will provide an interesting overview of the changing face of Carry On during the series' original mammoth twenty year run.

It will turn the spotlight on the familiar faces who endured over the decades as well as those artists who came and went along the way. We are continuing today with the third year of Carry On: 1960. Well actually is 1960 and 1961 as for the only time in the series, a film was made over two years, from the end of 1960 into the beginning of 1961. Carry On Regardless was the film (the fifth in the franchise) and it was eventually released in the April of 1961.

Pictured above we have the most prolific actors to appear in 1960/61. They are as follows: Sidney James, pictured as Bert Handy; Kenneth Connor as Sam Twist; Charles Hawtrey pictured above Gabriel Dimple; Joan Sims as Lily Duveen; Kenneth Williams pictured as Francis Courtenay; Bill Owen as Mike Weston; Terence Longdon as Montgomery Infield-Hopping; Liz Fraser as Delia King and finally, Esma Cannon as Miss Cooling.

Of those featured five (Connor, Williams, Hawtrey, Owen and Longdon) were original cast members from the very first film, Carry On Sergeant in 1958. Liz Fraser made her first appearance in the series here while Esma Cannon appears for the first time in a main role following her cameo in the previous film, Carry On Constable in 1959. Hattie Jacques, although not appearing in a starring role, does pop up in a cameo in Regardless. Jacques was due to play Delia King however illness saw her role restricted and the part recast and restructured for Liz.

Stay tuned for the Carry On Faces of 1962 coming up soon!
